Winter Exfoliation: Why it's important

Why it's so important to exfoliate in the winter
Winter Exfoliation

Exfoliation is a broad term that is frequently misunderstood.   An exfoliant product can range from the gentlest scrub to an invasive medical treatment that require down-time for recovery.

Exfoliation can be described as a product or step that encourages dead skin cells to release and wash away.  When dead skin cells flake off, neuron messengers report it to the brain, and the brain sends back signals to let a new layer of skin begin at the bottom of the dermis, hastening the skin’s reproduction.  As we age, this reduction slows down, so adding exfoliation to your routine will encourage and improve cell turnover.

Working an exfoliation step into your home care routine can dynamically change your skincare results at home.  With a little information, you can build a safe and highly effective exfoliation program that will enhance the performance of your skincare products and dramatically improve the quality of your skin.

Some of our products contain ingredients that enhance exfoliation.  We consider each of them when creating an exfoliation program to make sure it stays in a safe range.  Some cleansers, scrubs and retinol products may contain “active” exfoliating elements.  It is important to be aware which of your products contain active ingredients.

More exfoliation is not necessarily the goal.  We don’t want to irritate the skin or cause redness or inflammation.   Your skin condition can change will dehydration, illness, stress and other environment situations, so it is important to understand how to manage your exfoliation to avoid over-exfoliating.

When you exfoliate as a part of your home care routine, pay attention to how your skin feels as you begin to cleanse for face.  If your cleanser causes a tingle, you should avoid all forms of exfoliation until your skin is calm and clear for at least one week, then gradually resume your program. It can also cause sun sensitivity, making the colder months perfect for winter exfoliation.

When creating an exfoliation plan, introduce each exfoliating product one at a time to avoid reactions.  Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
